The "woww." when you first see Moonlight Ravine, or the " Whoa!" when you find a secret area complete with music and fluorescent mushrooms. The most memorable parts of the game are when you go stray from the path and find something incredible on your own. That's how it feels in Phoenotopia's massive storybook that only gets more satisfying to uncover. You ever climb a tree for 5 minutes expecting rubies and gold, but it's just a chicken? Ever get that feeling of defeating a giant frog and reviving an ancient amphibian race? Or finding a dusty book saying the club you just joined is intergalactically recognized? Imagine if every hidden area in Zelda had a piece of lore explaining how biological weapons survived planetary devastation. If you removed the music, combat, and the main plotline, Phoenotopia would still be a complete game. This is the aspect Phoenotopia: Awakening has on the triple-A scale. Whatever the writers did to this game, it WORKS.īut then there's exploration. Enemies can be as ruthless as the NPCs say they are, yet variety and designs along with the "whew I made it" feeling still keeps enemies fresh. But at the same time, its story is lore-filled and at times downright serious, especially in one incredibly poignant war-ruined zone. It's reminiscent of Undertale in that dialogue is fun to read, sprinkled with hilarious gems. and the best part is that this extends to the rest of the game.
